CEO Blog: The (Amazing) Week That Was

With a number of great initiatives coming to fruition around the same time, the last week has been truly amazing for us.  We have lots of news to share with our friends and clients.  Here are the highlights.

After announcing our membership of 1% for the Planet in January 2012, we spent much of last year looking at different non-profits to get involved with.  We wanted a local organisation and after many months of  internal discussion, we chose Belgian NGO Natuurpunt to receive our 1% of sales, as it works with nature conservation around Brussels and in Flanders.

With our contribution, Natuurpunt will open up the Steentjesbos wood - 30 km (18 miles) from our office - with a new signposted footpath, information boards and other features to make this local beauty spot more accessible for walkers and families to visit.  The footpath will open in August.

The second piece of news we announced was the launch of Green Drinks Brussels.  With so many environmental professionals in Brussels, we saw a need for a networking space to bring people together.  Therefore, we took the initiative and to become the official organiser of Green Drinks Brussels, as listed on the international Green Drinks website.  The first Green Drink is on Wednesday 22 May.  Check out the Facebook Group and if you’re in Brussels, we hope to see you at the Aloft Hotel on Wednesday.

We also announced our membership of Kauri, the Belgian CSR Network which we became a member of this year.  We were thrilled to have a quote from Kauri’s Jan Ockerman who said that by linking PR, journalism, marketing, science and creative arts, we “know how to cross borders and still keep our authenticity.”

On the client side, the last week has also been very exciting.   Our client BioAmber, the US/Canadian bio-based chemical company, listed on the New York Stock Exchange and intends to list in Paris soon as well.  They are the first start-up we’ve taken from the very beginning right through to the initial public offering (IPO), providing support on communications and media throughout.  It’s a great company and they deserve every success.

I’m so happy and proud to be part of the Sustainability Consult Team, working with great clients and amazing people.  Our contribution may only be small in the grand scheme of things but we are doing the things I dreamed of when I set up the company almost five years ago.  We are committed to contributing in any way we can and to providing the best service to our clients and our community.  I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who is helping us to make this happen.

In the next few weeks, I’ll be out and about on the conference circuit, starting at the Sustainable Communications Forum in London next week, then Sustainable Brands ’13 in San Diego and from there onto the BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology in Montreal.  I hope to see you at Green Drinks Brussels or at one of these shows.
